Victims of one of Britain’s worst child abuse scandals have shared a record £100million in compensation. Lambeth council paid out the cash to hundreds of ex-residents at children’s homes, including Shirley Oaks in South London. Victim Raymond Stevenson jointly led the fight by the Shirley Oaks Survivors’ Association. The payout scheme closes on January 1. SOSA said: “We want to remind everyone who was in a Lambeth children’s home this is the last opportunity for them to apply for redress.”
An inquiry in July ruled kids were abused by paedophiles who got jobs in the care system. One, John Carroll, kept his despite a 1986 child sex abuse conviction coming to light. He was later sacked over another matter and jailed for 10 years in 1999 for sex attacks after a probe by Merseyside Police. Lambeth council said the payout scheme was “the first of its type in the country”.
