Kate and Gerry McCann could discover this week what evidence police allegedly have that their daughter is dead.  A high-level meeting is due to take place between their Portuguese lawyer and detectives involved in the long-running probe.  The pressure is mounting on authorities to come clean over what they know about tragic Madeleine’s fate.  German prosecutors claim to have evidence she is dead but have so far refused to tell the McCanns what that is.  However, they have shared the information with Portuguese police, who last night described it as “significant” and “very important”.  “I want to find out if there are new leads for them to chase. I want to know what is being done.  I intend to get answers on these matters this week.  What I hope is that everybody helps to find the truth instead of hiding information, or keeping information for themselves.  We are waiting for more information from the police and from the prosecutor.  We are waiting for the information that should be provided to us, but there is nothing more we can do but wait.  According to Portuguese law, if the prosecutor has new information about the crime he should reopen it.  I don’t know how strong the new evidence is so I don’t know what the prosecutor is going to do.  In terms of the investigation, and the parent’s hopes for justice, last week was a lost week.  At the moment the police forces are arguing and this row is stupid. It seems they are trying to compete with each other.  Madeleine’s parents don’t want to know which police force thinks it is doing the best. They do not want a war of words.  It is no use this is a waste of time.  All the police should be doing is trying to solve the case. I want to see full cooperation between the police forces.”

Last week Mr. Alves branded German authorities “cruel” for refusing to say what evidence they have that Madeleine was killed.  He said Kate and Gerry, of Rothley, Leics, “have a right to know” what happened to their daughter.  “They need to know what’s going on,” he said. “It’s a question of legality but also humanity. It’s cruel.”

It was claimed yesterday that Brueckner may be flown to Portugal to take part in a reconstruction of the night Madeleine disappeared.  It could prove key to unlocking the case and would be simple to organise once a formal German request is approved by Lisbon.  Portuguese legal expert Rui Pereira told Correio da Manha newspaper that any reconstruction depends on countries working together.  He said: “A number of procedures could be carried out under the umbrella of international co-operation.  “The suspect could be flown to Portugal for the practice of judicial enactments that require him to be present.”

Portuguese police traditionally use reconstructions to test the claims of suspects who deny involvement in crimes.  It is not clear how Brueckner’s reconstruction would work as he was a drifter living in a VW camper van when Madeleine vanished in May 2007.  He left his former ramshackle home on the outskirts of Praia da Luz the previous after being locked up for petrol theft.  The 43-year-old German is currently serving a 15-month drug-dealing sentence in jail in the northern city of Kiel.
